Be the best you can be Broadacres! GO BOBCATS GO! Broadacres Junior School, situated north of Burnhamthorpe Road and west of The West Mall, first opened in 1959. The school is a single-story facility hosting approximately 360 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. Grade 4 and Grade 5 Gifted Program classes for this area are also a part of our school, as are Early French Immersion. A nutritious morning snack is provided daily. On-site Before and After School Programs provide an extended day for some of our students. We are fortunate to have a strong and very supportive parent and school community.
Strong Arts Focus
At Broadacres, specialized music teachers work with all classes from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3. Our Primary and Junior Choirs perform at assemblies and concerts both large and small. We have co-curricular Dance and Arts and Crafts Clubs. Drama is integrated throughout the curriculum and our students enjoy creating and performing in role.
Healthy, Active Living
At Broadacres we promote a healthy, active lifestyle. Our Nutrition Program provides a morning snack to all students. All classes participate in Daily Physical Activity (DPA) and have Health & Physical Education 3 times per week. We also offer a skating skating program (Gr. 1 - 5). A wide range of co-curricular activities keep students active at lunch time.
The Gifted Program
We are pleased to house the Gifted program for students in Gr. 4 & 5 in central and southern Etobicoke. Children who attend have been identified as "Intellectually Gifted" through the IPRC (Identification, Placement and Review Committee) process in their various home schools.
Before and After School Care Program
An extended day is offered at reasonable cost to Broadacres students through our Before and After School Care Programs, which make it possible for children to participate in supervised activities from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and/or from 3 to 6 p.m. The program also runs on Professional Activitiy Days (PA Days) during the school year.
Early French Immersion
In September 2012, Broadacres began to offer Early French Immersion. We now have classes from SK - 5.
Student Life - Where You Belong
Life at Broadacres is busy! The day starts for our students the moment they step on the school bus, or into our school grounds in the morning! We have a beautifully large yard which backs on a park, a great playscape, and our naturalized area gives students a place to explore. There are LOTS of school events, such as School Spirit Days and trips, including our annual Skating Days. Our Co-curricular Activities run during the lunch hour to accommodate those children who travel by bus. Offerings include Running, Dance, Yoga, Scrapbooking, Board Games and Silver Birch Reading clubs, Primary and Junior Choirs, Lego Robotics, and Throwball and Floor Hockey intramurals. Our Broadacres Bobcats compete in Cross Country and Track and Field Meets and Slo-Pitch, Extreme Frisbee and Flag Rugby Tournaments.
What Sets Us Apart
The Gifted Program: Children who attend our Gifted Program have been identified as "Intellectually Gifted" through the IPRC (Identification, Placement & Review Committee) process in their home schools. Designed to effectively meet the needs of students who require support beyond what is available in the regular classroom, the curriculum is differentiated in terms of depth, pace and breadth of content. The focus is upon developing and extending creative and critical thinking and problem-solving skills through research and inquiry. It also provides a unique opportunity to work with like-minded peers. An offer of placement in the program is made by the school board through the student's home school. A "Gifted Information Night" and "Buddy Visit" are arranged each spring to orient prospective students and their families.
The Early French Immersion Program: Beginning in SK (and ONLY in SK), the program offers children an opportunity to be immersed full-time in a French-speaking environment. Registration is open to JK students from Broadacres and neighbouring schools.
Parent and Community Engagement
School, home and community partnerships are very important to us. Communication is regular and on-going through a variety of methods. Many volunteer opportunities are available in classrooms, on excursions and at special events. Our strong School Council meets regularly to discuss and provide input on important issues and to raise funds for many “extras”, all of which have great impact upon our students and our school. Our community partners include The Learning Partnership, The Toronto Foundation for Student Success, Breakfast for Learning, Baylis Medical and “The Food Basket” at St. James United Church. In addition, we provide mentorship to high school Co-op students and adult learners from several community colleges and university Faculties of Education.
