Briarwood Public School is located in the Mississauga Valley neighbourhood in east Mississauga. We are a kindergarten to grade 5 school serving a student population of approximately 500 students. A specialized program for children with developmental disabilities is also provided at Briarwood, and full-day kindergarten is offered as of September 2012. Briarwood provides families with a high quality after school child care program operated by PLASP, a partner agency. This program provides daily nutritional snacks and a wide variety of interesting activities for school-aged children.
The Briarwood school community is a rich and diverse mosaic of cultures, traditions and faiths. Our supportive parent community, an excellent staff and motivated students are all welcome components of this school. Briarwood has enjoyed a longstanding tradition of educational excellence and community involvement.
At Briarwood, we are committed to building upon our tradition of high academic standards and to fostering the social, physical and emotional development of each student. We provide a rich and stimulating learning environment that is safe, nurturing and positive. Collaboratively, we utilize the full resources of school and community to ensure every child reaches their full potential.
Briarwood has stepped into the future with the latest in technology in our classrooms. As well, many challenging and exciting programs beyond academics are available for our students, including: extracurricular activities such as basketball, handball, cross country, track and field, softball, knitting club, spelling bees, talent shows, Blue Spruce Reading Club, choir and PALS. We also partner with community agencies to offer piano lessons and a karate club in the lunch hour or after school. Our supportive school council further enhances our instructional program by bringing experiential programs into our classrooms to support learning such as well-known book authors, Scientist in the School, Reptilia and Learning Through the Arts, to name a few.
At Briarwood, we are committed to teaching and promoting universal values that lead to caring and respectful relationships. Each month, we highlight one of the ten character traits that the Peel board has designated as key to developing caring and responsible citizens. Student participation in assemblies, morning announcements, spirit days, food drives and fundraising help our young learners understand the importance of giving to those less fortunate. The Briarwood school community annually supports a variety of worthwhile causes including the Salvation Army Food and Mitten Drive, Jump Rope For Heart, the United Way, and the Terry Fox Run for Cancer.
