Harwood Public School is located off McCormack Street, west of Weston Road and between Rogers Road and St. Clair Avenue. Our school has a long and rich history dating back to 1928. Harwood serves approximately 170 students representing about 25 different language groups. Over half of our students speak a language other than English. We now offer Grade 4 Extended French. Harwood teaching staff provide a wide range of experiences to support student learning. Our goal at Harwood Public School is to develop and maintain a safe, welcoming atmosphere that promotes the best possible learning environment for everyone in the school.

Literacy Plan
Monthly meetings address specific teaching strategies to reach our at-risk learners. Student based cross curricular learning is embedded in daily lessons. Focused instruction is provided through guided reading programs. Literacy blocks are present for all classes.Information provided to parents is clear, relevant and linked to children's' success in school.
Numeracy Plan
EQAO data and diagnostic assessment inform instruction. Instructional strategies meet specific student needs. Numeracy Blocks are present for all classrooms. Use of math manipulatives and technology are evident in all classrooms.
Community of Culture and Caring
Communication with parents through school and classroom newsletters occurs regularly. Meaningful parent, student, teacher contacts occur. Restorative-Conflict Resolution Practices support positive behaviour. Character development program and monthly recognition assemblies encourage positive behaviour.
Pathways Plan
Sharing and previewing work among students encourages critical thinking and discussions.Sharing assessment information (DRA,CASI, EQAO,CAT4 results) with teachers across the grades supports co-planning and co-teaching.Transition meetings with high schools supports the needs of all students. The use of assistive technology supports students' learning.

Student Life - Where You Belong
Harwood students have the opportunity to become involved in school life through many extra-curricular activities and clubs. At Harwood we have a house system where all students and staff belong and earn house points through participation in activities, Spirit Days and days of significance. Senior students are House leaders. Students participate in Sports Teams both competitive and intramural. Morning meal helpers deliver snacks to each class. School Safety Patrollers perform daily duties. Weekly Fun Fitness activities encourage students to be active.

Maintaining positive community relations is a priority at Harwood. Our students benefit from partnerships with the Mount Dennis Public Library, Toronto Foundation for Student Success, Royal Canadian Legion, Toronto Public Health, Toronto Police Services. Our parent council is instrumental in ensuring that parent volunteers are available to assist with our nutrition program, and our special Harwood days. Harwood offers a number of evening events for families including: Meet the Teacher/Curriculum Night, December Holiday Concert and our Annual Year End Community Feast.
