Huron Street Public School is situated in the Annex neighbourhood. The school originated in a building on Huron Street south of Bloor Street in the 1880's. In 1890, a school was built on the present site. In 1958, the 1890 building was demolished and replaced by the present, two-storey structure.
- The school serves about 400 students. Approximately half of the students are of English-speaking backgrounds, the remaining students represent a wide variety of language groups. Huron Street Public School offers programs from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The Superfriends Daycare facility is an on-site school-age daycare for students in Grades 1-6 and they also run the Before and After School Care program for students in Kindergarten.

Our Focus: To promote high quality balanced literacy and math programs that effectively meet the needs of all learners. To provide new classroom resources in math and language that improve student achievement and support the implementation of the Ontario Curriculum. Integrating the Arts into classroom programs across the school. Improving students skills in Information Technology and using IT as a tool to improve student success.

EQAO Results
Our EQAO results continue to improve. Most of our students in Primary and Junior meet and exceed Ministry Standards. In 2018 for Grade 3, 81% (Reading), 91% (Writing) and 79% (Mathematics) of our students met or exceeded Ministry Expectations in EQAO testing. In Grade 6 the scores were 85% (Reading), 83% (Writing), and 56% (Mathematics) of students who met or exceeded Ministry Expectations in EQAO Testing. This year the staff is continuing to focus their professional learning on the teaching of Mathematics.

Numeracy
We focus on the effective teaching of all five strands of the math curriculum through a problem solving/inquiry approach. We encourage students' written and oral explanations in mathematics at each grade level, using pictures, numbers and words. We use a number of resources including manipulatives, text books, technology and Ministry Guide Books in our math programs.
Literacy
We recognize that language is the key to all learning. We provide our students with the skills to be Critical Thinkers by the Higher Order Questions we ask them (Blooms Taxonomy and Q-Chart). Our classrooms provide Balanced Literacy programs that meet the needs of all learners. We use appropriate assessment and evaluation strategies to drive instruction.
Assessment and Evaluation
The primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. Teachers assess student progress towards achieving the Ministry expectations on an ongoing basis. Huron teachers actively participate in Teaching Learning Critical Pathways and Professional Learning Communities allowing them time to reflect on best practices to improve student success.
Special Education
A variety of Special Education programs and services are offered to meet the needs of students. At Huron we have a Home School Program where students receive a modified program in Mathematics and Language. Huron also has a Junior Learning Disabilities class (Grades 4-6). Both programs incorporate technology in their daily learning.
Student Life - Where You Belong
There are a number of extra curricular programs at Huron including: athletics for Junior Students, Intramurals, Choir, Dance Club, Knitting Club, Robotics Club, Chess Club, Scrabble Club, Drama Club, Computer Club, Choirs, Spelling Bee, Geography Challenge, and various other programs that change on a year to year basis. Junior Students have the opportunity to build their leadership skills through such programs as Ambassadors, Kindergarten Lunchroom Assistants, 'Right to Play' Leaders and Morning Announcers.

Parent and Community Engagement
School Council plays a vital role in our school. It's a forum through which parents/caregivers and other members of the school community can contribute to improving students achievement and school performance. Parents/caregivers are involved in the following: fundraising, safe schools, volunteering in the classroom, Mental Health and Well Being, on field trips, and in the Library. We also have Parent/Class Representatives. Parents/guardians also organize a Spring Picnic for The Arts, Pizza Lunches, Skate Nights, they provide Early Reading Intervention for some of our Grade 1 students and various other initiatives.
