The school was built during the 1970's, and now serves just under 150 students representing many different cultural and language groups. At Ernest, we set high expectations for learning in academics and the arts. We believe in promoting student leadership opportunities and offer varied co-curricular activities. At Ernest we value parent partnerships to support student success, and promote regular and ongoing communication. As a community partner, our school hosts many Pleasant View Community Association special interest activities.
School Focus
At Ernest we have high expectations for learning, and support student achievement through many strategies. In particular a significant focus at Ernest is Student Leadership. Throughout their junior years, students have the opportunity to work in students' leadership initiatives. Many of our student leaders participate actively in leadership roles while others may choose to be involved in our Eco Team. As a Platinum Eco School, Ernest is committed to environmental protection. We are very proud of our student leaders.

Co-Curricular Activities
At Ernest we provide our students with a rich, varied co-curricular program which allows pupils to express personal interests, as well as develop team building skills and knowledge and appreciation of the arts. Co-curricular activities include sports (volleyball, basketball, soccer, x-country) and arts and crafts clubs.
Special Education and Learning Support Programs
At Ernest we have a variety of programs and resources to support the needs of all learners. We have a half day Home School Program, as well as an ELL (English Language Learner) program. We also have previously had Reading Recovery and Early Reading Intervention programs, and our experienced teachers continue to use those strategies.
Technology
In addition to an updated computer lab, Ernest P.S. has acquired sets of ipads for use in the junior and senior kindergarten classrooms, and expanded the number of laptops for use in our junior classes. Our students are being supported in their learning using up-to-date technology systems and applications.
Eco Team
Our Eco Team comprises staff, students, parents and volunteers. Our Eco Team is very student driven. As we have achieved Platinum Eco school status we are all highly involved in sustainability. Students also take responsibility for our green bin and recycling programs and initiate many ideas to improve the environment, e.g. bulb planting.

Student Life - Where You Belong
At Ernest we believe strongly in the value of encouraging student leadership. We offer many opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate responsibility and a sense of citizenship. Leadership opportunities include Office Helpers, Recycling Team, Green Bin Helpers, Door / Hall Monitors, and Library Helpers. Students are involved in many co-curricular activities, including sports activities such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, cross country, and arts activities. Ernest students are very conscious of our Eco School status and are all very active in supporting our litterless lunch and snack programs.

Ernest Public School is a rich learning environment comprising a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. Many of our students are new to Canada and thrive in our welcoming and supportive learning environment. We highly value the support of our Settlement workers (Settlement and Education Partnerships in Toronto) in their role as liaison and support to new Canadians, and in helping us to welcome them to our school, community and country. At Ernest we celebrate our many cultural heritages and our learning experiences are enriched by the variety of backgrounds which comprise our school community.
Parent and Community Engagement
Ernest students regularly participate in Area events, e.g. cross-country, basketball, volleyball tournaments, Speech Arts. Ryerson University students assist in reading programs within classrooms. After school programs include Pleasantview Community Association activities. Community partnerships enrich school programs, ie. VIP program and classroom visits by our School Liaison Officer, and Toronto Public Health. Initiatives such as Terry Fox Run, Food Drives, and Remembrance Day services and programs facilitated by 'Scientist in the School', visiting authors, school presentations, and Eco initiatives have enhanced classroom experiences for our students.
