Our School

Alexander Graham Bell Public School is a community of approximately 600 JK to Grade 8 learners who come from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The school is located in a community in north Ajax, near the intersection of Harkins Drive and Rossland Rd. The majority of our classes are housed within the school and we have four classes in portable classrooms at this time. We currently have a teaching staff of 37 at our school.

We offer Full Day Kindergarten and three different special education programs. We have two regional Multiple Exceptionality classes, and these classes serve students from various schools throughout Ajax. We also have the gifted program for eligible students who live in the Ajax area. Gifted classes range from Grades 4 to 8. Our school has a part-time ESL/ESD teacher who works with students and teachers to support curriculum.

At Alexander Graham Bell Public School, our goal is to prepare students to achieve to their fullest academic, social and fitness potential. We do this by teaching new knowledge and skills in an atmosphere of mutual respect that recognizes and values individual differences. We want each student to be prepared to meet future challenges as confident, contributing citizens with expertise so they may experience the joy of learning throughout the rest of their lives. We value collaboration, honesty, integrity and personal responsibility. We strive to model and teach these values daily to produce a school community where parents, teachers and students thrive in a positive, balanced atmosphere that celebrates personal effort and achievement.

Alexander Graham Bell has an active School Community Council (S.C.C.), who work together with school staff and students to achieve our common goals. We also have an active parent volunteer program that assists children in the classrooms, in small groups, or in individual settings. Students are also offered a variety of co-instructional activities at our school that develop their interests and leadership skills.

The Durham District School Board Equity and Inclusive Education Policy #4107 is a commitment to embracing diverse social realities; while maintaining positive, safe and inclusive environments for all students and staff. The policy is a reflection of Ontario's Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy, supporting all areas of Durham District School Board principles, practices, and guidelines. Alexander Graham Bell P.S. supports this policy through inclusive activities in our school and school community.

We value and respect all members of our school community and as such ensure that resources are provided that reflect the work being done to address anti-discrimination and inclusive education. These issues are discussed in the Ministry of Education's Curriculum documents to promote fairness, healthy relationships, and active, responsible citizenship. The Durham District School Board's school libraries and classroom resources reflect inclusivity and serve to foster sensitivity towards individuals and groups that have traditionally been and/or are currently being marginalized within the broader society. These resources serve to identify and remove barriers that may exist for various groups and families. They may touch on topics of ethnicity, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, family status and marital status. Our goal is to provide students with opportunities to promote equity and social justice.
